Trees in Guinea Project
Like Water is excited to announce our new initiative on sustainable and responsible management of hardwoods from Guinea. Many of you know the beautiful woods from Guinea we enjoy in our djembes, duns, krins and balafons. This wood is being harvested for cooking, furniture and drums everyday in West Africa. We at Like Water are establishing a new set of standards and opportunities for Earth and future-minded hardwood consumption.
At present our goals are these:
- To establish a forest reserve in the vicinity of Illymanya (our camp in Guinea), with a variety of woods, supported by the enthusiasts of West African Culture around the world. We will collect donations through our office in Chelsea, MI, and bring those funds to Guinea on our annual trip each March. We will post on our website the progress and scope of the endeavor. Travelers each year will have the opportunity to visit there, serve, and take part in maitenance and planting if desired.
- To raise awareness in Guinea among drummakers, carvers and foresters about sustainable land management.
- To set aside 2% of all Like Water West African hardwood product revenues each year. We will invest theses funds into our reserve, as well as into the education of the consumers around the world and the guys with the axes in Guinea.
